There is no doubt that terrible crimes do happen in the country and that more needs to be done to curb such crime, especially violent crime, throughout the country. But the truth is, violent crime has been declining or has leveled off at historic lows over the last 30 years. This is a fact. For most of the nation.

Unfortunately, Minneapolis is experiencing an alternate reality. According to recently released FBI crime data from 2015, the city has seen an increase in violent crime and robbery. CBS Minnesota WCCO even reported that Minneapolis has recently been named one of the nation’s most dangerous cities. Of course there are myriad reasons for the crime increase within the city. There is no single cause that can be eradicated or any one approach that will change the troubling trend. Instead, community members, law enforcement officials and politicians must continue discussing the challenges in reasonable ways that are informed by empathy.
